We conceptualised, structured and delivered an Ombudsman outreach strategy for Colombia’s Defensoría del Pueblo. It focused on the human rights of victims of forced displacement.
Communicate rights and available resources clearly to a vulnerable population. For this reason, every message had to be direct and easy to understand.
First, we designed the training and outreach strategy, with the aim of empowering victims of forced displacement in Colombia. Then we developed educational materials and graphic pieces on their rights and the resources available to them.
In addition, we laid out the final report with a professional presentation that stays consistent with the other pieces. In a project like this, design is not decoration. Instead, it is the tool that organises information and makes it approachable. For this reason, we worked with plain language and simple visual hierarchies. We also kept a respectful tone towards the people each piece is meant for.
A project that brings together teaching, design and empathy to empower affected communities and promote social justice. It also shows how a public body such as the Defensoría del Pueblo can use design to bring complex topics closer to the people who need them most. In short, clear information is also a way of protecting rights.
Does your organisation need to explain complex topics to diverse audiences? See our editorial design services or take a look at the ICCO learning materials, another educational project.
